2014. “We are Anonymous. We are Legion. We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”
The struggle for privacy has already become a central issue of the twenty-first century. Whereas the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius once noted that as soon as we are covered by a little earth nobody speaks of us, today we must fight for “the right to be forgotten.”
This project for a monument to the anonymous individual bears no names, and carries no testament. In coming centuries it will stand as a tomb to nobody, and therefore potentially anybody. It is thus a tomb for our entire civilisation.
Ashes of a person or persons (a couple, strangers, even several generations of a family) are mixed into thin concrete slabs 60cm x 200cm.
Submission for an invited competition by Bompas and Parr to design a tomb for a gregarious and ecclectic individual.
